Calculating exact ages and date differences can be confusing near the end of a month. This happens because months have different numbers of days. For example, the time from February 20 to March 20 is clearly one month. But the span from February 28, 2022, to March 31, 2022, can give different results. If a system treats both dates as the strict "end of the month," the result is exactly one month.

However, our calculator uses a standard math algorithm. It treats February 28 to March 28 as one full calendar month. It then adds the remaining days. This gives a precise result of one month and 3 days. We apply the same consistent logic to overlapping dates, like April 30 to May 31. We also apply it to May 30 to June 30. Let’s say you want to calculate the exact age of a person on March 10, 2026, who was born on November 15, 2006. Set up the dates in YYYY MM DD format from top to bottom.

• Subtract Calendar Days: Attempt to subtract 15 from 10. Because this results in a negative number, borrow from the months column. Shifting back one month from March (Month 3) lands you in February (Month 2). February has 28 days (in a non-leap year). Move those 28 days to your top day column: $10 + 28 = 38$. Now subtract the days: $38 - 15 = 23$ days.
• Subtract Months: Attempt to subtract 11 from 2 (since you borrowed a month). Because this is negative, borrow from the years column. Since all standard years contain exactly 12 months, borrow 1 year from 2026 ($2026 - 1 = 2025$) and add 12 months to your top month column ($2 + 12 = 14$). Now subtract the months: $14 - 11 = 3$ months.
• Subtract Years: Finally, subtract the birth year from your adjusted current year: $2025 - 2006 = 19$ years.
