Speed Conversion
Convert road, science, aviation, and marine speed units instantly as you type.
Convert between km/h and mph when a road sign, dashboard, training plan, or travel note uses a different speed system. The calculator starts with kilometers per hour and returns miles per hour instantly. It also accepts decimals and keeps enough precision for practical comparisons. Every calculation happens in your browser.
Use Swap to make mph the starting unit and km/h the result without opening another page. The page includes both formulas, worked road-speed examples, and reference tables in both directions. Correct unit notation remains km/h in the controls, while kmh and kph are explained as common text spellings. Round only when your final use calls for it.

Kilometers per hour measures the distance in kilometers traveled during one hour. The preferred formal symbol is km/h because the slash clearly means “per,” but kmh and kph are common plain-text spellings for the same unit. None of those spellings changes the size of the unit or the calculation.
Miles per hour measures statute miles traveled during one hour and uses the symbol mph. Road systems in the United States and United Kingdom commonly display mph, while most other countries post limits in km/h. That difference is why a traveler may see two unlike numbers for the same physical speed.
The calculator uses one editable value and two unit selectors. Results update as soon as the value or either unit changes, so there is no submit step. The initial pair is km/h to mph for the main search intent.
Swap reverses the selected units to handle miles per hour to kilometers per hour on this same URL. Reset restores a value of one and the original km/h-to-mph direction. Keep the displayed decimals while comparing values, then round for the road, sport, or report you are preparing.
One international mile equals exactly 1.609344 kilometers, so 1 mph equals 1.609344 km/h. To convert kilometers per hour to miles per hour, divide by 1.609344. The equivalent multiplier is approximately 0.6213711922.
To reverse the direction, multiply miles per hour by 1.609344. Using the exact factor until the final display avoids small errors that build up when a rounded shortcut is reused. The calculator applies the same shared factor for both directions.
These examples use speeds that appear in travel, driving, and training questions. Each answer is calculated with the full 1.609344 factor before rounding. A quick scale check helps: the mph number should be smaller than the km/h number for the same motion.
The reverse examples show why multiplying in the correct direction matters. For a dashboard comparison, keeping two decimal places is usually enough, while engineering work may retain more. Legal limits should always be read from the posted sign rather than a rounded mental estimate.
For anyone integrating this conversion into their own project, the core logic is a single multiplication or division by the same factor used above.
The snippets below use the exact 1.609344 factor so results match the calculator and the reference tables.
This JavaScript example applies the shared factor directly to the input value.
const KM_PER_MPH = 1.609344;
function kmhToMph(kmh) {'{'}
return kmh / KM_PER_MPH;
{'}'}
function mphToKmh(mph) {'{'}
return mph * KM_PER_MPH;
{'}'}
// 100 km/h to mph
kmhToMph(100); // ≈ 62.14Excel/Google Sheets equivalent: =A1/1.609344 (forward direction) or =A1*1.609344 (reverse direction).
The first table converts kilometer-per-hour values from 10 through 120 into miles per hour. It includes the frequently checked 50, 60, 70, 80, 100, and 120 values. Every cell is generated from the same conversion function used by the calculator rather than typed as a separate constant.
The second table reverses the source unit and covers the same numeric range in mph. Values are shown to two decimal places for scanning, not because the underlying factor is limited to two decimals. Use the live calculator when a value falls between rows or needs more displayed precision.

The most common error is treating mph and km/h as nearly equal. Their factor is 1.609344, not about one, so a guessed answer can be far enough off to matter on the road. Another error is multiplying when the source is km/h, which makes the result larger instead of smaller.
Kph, kmh, and km/h name the same kilometer-per-hour unit; they are not three scales. Rounding 1.609344 to 1.6 is acceptable for a rough estimate but should not replace the full factor in a final calculation. Check the direction and units before trusting the digits.
Mistake | Effect | Check |
|---|---|---|
| Treating mph and km/h as equal | Creates a large scale error | Confirm the 1.609344 factor |
| Multiplying km/h by 1.609344 | Produces the reverse conversion | A km/h-to-mph result should be smaller |
| Treating kph, kmh, and km/h differently | Duplicates one unit under three spellings | Read all three as kilometers per hour |
| Rounding before the final step | Introduces avoidable drift | Keep the full factor until the end |
The kilometer–mile relationship is defined exactly, so the calculator can use 1.609344 without an approximation in its conversion step. Display formatting limits the visible decimal places, but it does not change the direction or the factor. For repeated calculations, use the original value instead of copying an already rounded result. This exact relationship traces back to the 1959 International Yard and Pound Agreement, which fixed the yard at exactly 0.9144 meters and, by extension, the mile at exactly 1,609.344 meters.
Road signs and vehicle instruments may apply their own display rounding, tolerances, or legal rules. This page is suitable for ordinary travel, exercise, and technical comparisons, but it does not replace posted limits or calibrated safety equipment. Inputs remain in the browser and are not submitted as conversion requests.
